David Segal is a master bass guitar player/builder, plain and simple. I've known David for a very long time and have had the benefit of his vast insight and expertise on many a project. However, I am only now getting my first instrument from him. Over the past 30 years or so I have had instruments in my hands from many of the major builders spanning the globe. Few have paid the attention to detail that David has and it shows in every aspect of the 5 string that David has made for me. I have had basses that I have designed for myself and had made from premier custom bass manufacturers. They just don't compare to the instrument I have now. Sure, everyone says that when they get a new instrument, don't they?
The fact of the matter is that the devil is in the details, every-time, with an NYBW instrument. There are no superfluous components or trickery in David's instruments, just pure dedication to quality and features that demonstrate a very high bass player/builder IQ, unsurpassed by anyone that I know of building today. In my hands now is an instrument that is as much precision tool as it is musical instrument. An instrument that sings in every register and delivers a mind boggling cornucopia of tones for a single pickup, fretted bass. David sticks to his guns and doesn't follow the trends of the day and, he delivers an instrument that is very much a part of the past and present, yet aimed squarely at the future.
I regret that it has taken me so long to get an NYBW!

Dave’s basses are second to none. His meticulous attention to detail makes his instruments very comfortable, perfectly balanced and a joy to play. The construction is top notch and the tone is unbeatable. I am constantly being complimented on the sound and the beauty of the instruments. Besides being such a great work of art, his basses will deliver consistently show after show, I never have to worry about them delivering what I need. Simply put they are the best basses available.
Besides all that Dave is a great bassist himself, a cool guy to be around, and a joy to work with. Thanks
Dave!

NYBW instruments are by far the best I’ve ever played. The Cremona 5 string is my main and favorite bass. The build quality is second to none. The playability and tone inspires me to create and play like no other bass can. Intense attention to detail, from wood selection to the input jack are taken to ensure that nothing but the best is delivered. My Cremona fits in whatever musical context I find myself in. Whether I’m in the studio, or playing live, from Latin music to Gospel music, my NYBW comes with me. It’s a perfect combination of beauty and function. A bass built by a bass player, for bass players. This is my forever bass!

This NYBW is the most versatile bass that I have ever played period. When it comes to tone, intonation, action, presence, clarity, depth and consistency you can't ask for anything more. It is quite simply the best! I can’t thank David enough for taking the time to get this out to me. Part of the reason why David Segal makes the best basses is probably due to the fact that he is an amazing bassist who has the gift and skill to translate his understanding of what a bass player needs into building an instrument that feels like it is an extension of one’s self. David will go the extra mile to make sure you get the right axe, something that is a work of art and craftsmanship. It's an honor to be part of the NYBW family.

"For me consistency is the key to the instruments at NYBW. Whether I am recording, playing small clubs , or touring the large halls, the consistency of tone, the accuracy of the neck, and the overall durability of the instrument speak to the superior craftsmanship at NYBW".

The bass arrived safely and in one piece :-) and what can i say... i'm lacking of words. it's an awesome instrument. i felt comfortable from the first second although i've never played a 34.5" scale. it is so well balanced seated and standing it looks amazing and of course it sounds great. i had the chance to use it on a concert on friday for the first time for a kind of world music band where I'm subbing from time to time and everbody was extremly happy. the sound engineer said he had to do nothing just open the channel :-) i was using my walter woods eq flat and epifani 112 (the bass was played passive, tone control between quarter and half open) and i've been so happy on stage in every setting. i could always hear myself and i could always find a sound that fit the song. from a slow emotional ballad to funky james brown grooves. so what more can i say than thank you thank you thank
you... it was worth waiting the time...

I played the bird for at least three hours yesterday. It plays perfect, killer sustain and tone...BUTTER! the top is gorgeous its almost like fossilized ammonites and seashells are imbedded in it. Thats the best finish I've ever experienced ....This bass is smoother than glass!!! You got the fingerboard to body spacing perfect and the bass is super easy to play, I have no other bass like it. It truly is awesome for slappin and everything else!give me two more weeks to explore this bass and I'll know it better. Hey David,
There isn't much to add to what has already been said by many others. The craftsmanship and playability of this instrument is off the charts. It exudes "effortless" playing, incredible tone and versatility. While playing it, there's a constant reminder that these instruments are very special. It doesn't fight you in any way and allows you to concentrate on the music. Quite simply...Thank you! Its an honor to have worked with you on this project and a privilege to own this bass.
Best Always,
Brian

Just wanted to drop a quick line. The Cremona/Aguilar is a wonderful combo, talk about fat, strong, versatile tone. As expected, playability is very comfortable. I couldn't be happier. Thanks again.

"I ordered my Deep Jazz 6 directly from New York Bass Works (NYBW) and received it early 2001. Its everything I've wanted and more. My inspiration for this bass was the classic mid-70s Jazz Bass. Maple board, ash body, Jazz-style pickups. David Segal (of NYBW) and I used this as a starting point to design an extended-scale 6-string bass of the highest build and sound quality. I told David I didn't want a bass, but a 'hand-piano'! He didn't disappoint. The bass is incredibly comfortable. The action-setup was perfect when I first picked it up, and since then it hasn't budged.
My Concert fretless is a simple instrument - just how I like it. Passive. When it comes to sound , this instrument needs no help whatsoever. The sheer amount of deep , tight bass is staggering. This thing barks with authority and is very responsive. Oh yeah, and aside from my 6, it has the most well-defined 'B' I've ever played or heard."

"NYBW is AS GOOD AS IT GETS. Dead Serious. David Segal is the most genuine person I have ever worked with in the bass manufacturing world. This is the finest fretless I have ever played. It is like an extension of my most expressive self. The bottom line: Phenomenal tone up and down the neck like I have never had before, and with exceptional playability. It sounds great no matter what I plug it into (within reason). My Deep Jazz 6 has a nice sunburst finish. It has passive J style pickups. Ever hear a 6 string with vintage 60s J tone? It's here. The slap and finger-style tone is phenomenal. Focused but still warm lows, punchy but not overbearing or nasally mids, clean highs. The tone is a dream and is its strongest point. My 6's are very ergonomic and are more comfortable to play than most fivers. They are a joy. Thanks again, David! You have helped me make my music and express myself."

"Excellence is the word I use to describe New York Bass Works. The NYBW bass is hands down the best bass on the planet. I've had my NYBW for almost 4 years and it is the only bass I play for every situation from J.T. Taylor to El DeBarge, Sherry Winston to Marc Cary, and everything in between. This is the most versatile bass you will ever play. David Segal is truly the bass god and the NYBW is the Holy Grail. Dave Jones - bassist- New York
"I've been a bass player for over thirty years and it seemed impossible to find the bass that had it all. To me that means tone, depth, presence, character, consistency, balance, comfort, elegance, and of course, it's own voice. That is until I met David Segal of NYBW. Dave is the real deal"
"I am proud to say I am the first NYBW customer. Keep up the good work Dave. I always knew you were the best".

"I have owned or auditioned just about every bass I could get my hands on. For many years I thought nothing could unseat a good healthy Jazz Bass. Then when I decided that I needed a "B" string, there wasn't a good working instrument to be found at any price. When I met Dave Segal of New York Bass Works, my "less than stellar" opinion of expensive hand made instruments quickly changed. For those looking for a truly world class instrument, you owe it to yourself to try an NYBW. I now own four NYBW's and I have had the opportunity to play several others. Worth every cent. No one comes even remotely close".
