We're proud to announce a rare and unprecedented release of several P- and J-style 4-string basses—alongside two of our flagship RL6 instruments—as part of a special stock drop. For those who’ve followed our work over the years, you’ll know just how uncommon it has been to find multiple 4-strings available at once. That changes now.
This drop marks a new chapter: moving forward, 4-string availability will no longer be the exception—but the rule.
We’ve heard from many players who love what we do but remain committed to the immediacy and tradition of the 4-string format. While our extended-range instruments have garnered much attention, we’ve never regarded the 4-string as an afterthought. In fact, it’s where the heart of electric bass was born—and we believe it still deserves a forward-thinking, musically rich approach.
At New York Bass Works, our builds are never about nostalgia for its own sake. Every instrument is created within a design framework that prioritizes real-world musicality, tonal integrity, and the nuanced demands of professional players.
Tonewoods: This drop continues our commitment to proven sonic platforms—ash or alder bodies paired with maple necks and either maple or Indian rosewood fingerboards. These choices are deliberate, offering a strong and familiar voice with a balanced frequency range and consistent performance across instruments.
Electronics: Of the instruments in this drop, three feature our proprietary NYBW preamp—designed to provide clarity, high headroom, and tonal flexibility without masking the natural character of the instrument. The remaining basses are passive by design, chosen to showcase the raw voice of our pickups and the acoustic fingerprint of the build itself. Whether passive or active, each system is carefully voiced and installed with the instrument’s full sonic profile in mind.
Feel & Form: While many will recognize the P- and J-style silhouettes, every contour, carve, and taper has been refined for comfort and balance—whether seated, standing, or in the studio. The goal is always the same: to support the player physically while delivering an intuitive and expressive playing experience.
Build Philosophy: These aren’t production-line builds. Each instrument reflects our small-scale approach: every body is acoustically matched, every detail is scrutinized, and no instrument leaves the shop until it meets our standards for tone, stability, and musical response. The result is a bass that feels alive and responsive—whether it’s your first note or your hundredth take.
This stock drop represents both a rare opportunity and a long-term shift. We’re reaffirming our commitment to the 4-string platform—not as a nostalgic gesture, but as a vital part of our sonic identity moving forward. Full photos of every instrument in this release can be found in the In Stock gallery on our homepage. If you've been waiting for a 4-string NYBW that embodies clarity, integrity, and intention—this is it.
